DETROIT – The Whalers turned their trip to the Motor City into a statement win, spoiling the Red Wings’ self-declared "Guaranteed Win Night" with a hard-fought 4-3 victory in front of a sellout crowd at Little Caesars Arena.
Detroit started strong, putting the visitors on their heels early as Anthony Duclair opened the scoring less than six minutes into the game. Just over two minutes later, Brandon Duhaime extended the lead to 2-0, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. But the Whalers found their footing midway through the period, with Anthony Cirelli leading the charge. The centerman struck twice in quick succession, first at 11:45 and again at 14:11, knotting the score at two apiece heading into the second frame.
The back-and-forth affair continued as Robby Fabbri put Detroit ahead once more, converting on a power play at 14:20 of the second period. But the Whalers were not about to let the night belong to the home team. Artturi Lehkonen evened the score at 19:22, setting the stage for a tense final frame.
With momentum shifting, Matthew Tkachuk delivered the decisive blow on the power play at 11:47 of the third, rifling a shot past Alexandar Georgiev to give Hartford its first lead of the night. Goaltender Simeon Varlamov stood tall the rest of the way, finishing with 31 saves to secure the win.
Cirelli was named the game’s first star for his two-goal performance, while Varlamov earned second-star honors for his strong play between the pipes. Lehkonen rounded out the three-star selection with a key goal and an assist.
The Whalers will savor their comeback win, while the Red Wings are left to regroup after letting multiple leads slip away on a night they had hoped would be a sure victory.
