Korpisalo Wins in Debut as Blackhawks Deal Andersen to Canucks

Post by Chicago »

June 15, 2025 – Chicago, IL
Just hours after newly acquired goaltender Joonas Korpisalo earned a 2–1 victory in his Blackhawks debut against the Los Angeles Kings, the team announced the trade of Frederik Andersen to the Vancouver Canucks. Chicago receives a 5th-round pick in the 2025 RSHL Draft in return.

Andersen, who started one game for the Blackhawks earlier this week, suffered a loss in that appearance. Despite the result, his professionalism and team-first mentality stood out during his brief stint in the Windy City.

“This wasn’t easy,” said GM Dillon Anderson. “Fred is a pro in every sense of the word. I even looked into ways to keep both him and Joonas on the roster. But at the end of the day, this was about fit, timing, and what’s best for the team going forward.”

Korpisalo Shines Immediately

Korpisalo, 31, stopped 27 of 28 shots against the Kings, anchoring Chicago to a tightly contested 2–1 win in his first outing with the club.

“We’ve had our eye on Joonas for a while,” Anderson said. “He gives us structure, experience, and the ability to compete in close games. That’s exactly what he gave us today.”

Korpisalo was happy to get to work right away.
“It’s always nice to start with a win,” he said. “The guys in front of me played hard and made my job easier. I’m excited to be here and help this team however I can.”

Andersen Grateful Despite Short Stay

Though his stay in Chicago was short-lived, Andersen expressed gratitude for the opportunity.

“It didn’t go the way I wanted on the ice, but the staff and teammates were great to me,” Andersen said. “I’ve been traded before — it’s part of the game. Vancouver’s a good team and I’m ready to go to work.”

GM Anderson emphasized that the decision was not performance-based.

“Fred gave us what he had, and that start wasn’t on him alone,” Anderson said. “Vancouver is getting a steady veteran who can still help a team in a playoff race. We wish him the best.”

Next Phase: The Draft

With Andersen's departure, Chicago now holds 28 picks in the 2025 RSHL Draft. GM Anderson said trade talks are slowing, but not entirely finished.

“We’re still engaged with teams about prospects, maybe looking to move a few for future picks,” he said. “But the core moves are done. Now it’s about getting our board ready and building the next wave of Blackhawks talent.”
