Blackhawks Trade Grubauer and Staal to San Jose, Add Depth and 2025 Pick

Blackhawks Trade Grubauer, Staal to Sharks, Acquire Raanta in Multi-Player Deal

CHICAGO — The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that they have traded goaltender Philipp Grubauer and veteran center Jordan Staal to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for forward William Lockwood, defenseman Robert Hagg, goaltender Antti Raanta, and Detroit’s third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

The move marks one of the final roster adjustments for Chicago ahead of the June 20 trade deadline, as GM Dillon Anderson confirmed the team is wrapping up its retooling phase.

“We’ve made the key moves we wanted to make,” Anderson said. “Philipp and Jordan were tremendous for us, but this deal helps us round out our depth while securing another pick in a deep draft class.”

Grubauer, who had recently delivered a strong performance in a surprise win over Edmonton, was viewed as one of the top trade chips remaining on the roster. Staal, the team’s captain and veteran presence down the middle, brought leadership and two-way play throughout his tenure in Chicago.

Goaltender Antti Raanta joins the Blackhawks as a veteran backup option and is expected to close out his RSHL career with Chicago before returning to Finland to continue playing professionally.

“Antti brings calm, professionalism, and a wealth of experience to our locker room,” Anderson said. “He’s expected to help mentor our younger players in the final stretch and finish his RSHL journey with us before heading back to Finland. We’re proud to be the final stop on his incredible career.”

Incoming forward William Lockwood is expected to remain in the AHL for now but is viewed by the front office as a player capable of returning to the NHL next season.

“We see Lockwood as a hard-nosed depth piece with real upside. He plays with pace and grit—qualities we want more of,” Anderson added.

Robert Hagg, a physical, stay-at-home defenseman, will add experienced depth to Chicago’s blue line for the remainder of the season.

With this trade, the Blackhawks have effectively completed their roster shuffle, positioning themselves for both a competitive finish and a clearer path toward next season.

“We’re excited about the group we have now. It’s time to let the team gel and finish the year strong,” said Anderson.
