Behind The Mask

With Kelly Hrudey

This week I'm going to have a look at teams experiencing a little holiday hangover. I'm calling out Calgary, Winnipeg, Dallas, Anaheim and Detroit. My Game of the Week will feature two teams on the way up.

The Blueshirts are hovering around the. 500 mark and share the division cellar with their cross-town rivals the Islanders. The Jets have cooled their engines lately. 2-4-4 in their last 10, they'll need to get back to basics especially in the tough Dionne Division.

The Stars are in a tough division to be sure but I expected more consistency from them. Going 3-5-2 isn't going to cut it. They're not bad but can't lose ground in that division. The Ducks meanwhile have been wheeling and dealing but for all that, they're only a game above .500. Maybe time to let the lineup settle a little.

Detroit has been a little mediocre lately and I'm wondering if Marc Andre Fleury is getting a little fatigued. Winners of two straight they've only won four of their past ten. The Devils are holding their own in the ultra-competitive Esposito Division and will look to avenge an earlier 2-0 shutout. Points are at a premium here.

The Sharks have been tinkering with their lineup and the fine-tuning seems to be working. 7-3 and more noticeably winners of four straight games in the last ten, San Jose look to move up in the standings. The Flames haven't been so hot but are still in the thick of things. They won't catch the Oilers or Canucks but need to put some distance between themselves and Anaheim and the hard-charging Chicago Blackhawks.

The Lightning have caught fire and the Nordiques and Whalers had better pay attention. Only three points back from Quebec you know head coach Ron Wilson will have his troops ready. Quebec may have an answer for them, however. 5-1 in their last six and past the mental block known as Hartford, they've regrouped nicely before falling to San Jose 3-2. Only three points up on Tampa Bay they'll want to send a message to their division rivals. They're also only two points behind Hartford with three more meetings ahead. They shouldn't be looking ahead however.

Well there you go. I hope you enjoy the games this week and please be safe everybody. Until next week. KH
